I cannot recall how or when I came into possession of the following recording but It wasn't until last Christmas that, feeling both nostalgic and homesick, that I played it for Katalina and listened to it in its entirety for the very first time. While I have no memories of my grandfather there is an unmistakable familiarity in his voice, his manner of speaking, and his sense of narrative. Several of these stories I had been told by my father over the years, but most were totally new to me. Some of the tales are simple, some humorous and anecdotal, and some are family legends that most all of us probably have been told. Listening to them makes me feel connected to something larger, something both historical and ephemeral. if you've never heard them before, I think you're in for a treat. Merry (belated) Christmas!
